As much as I like flying the Dash 8, I took this particular trip with a grudge. Thanks to German carrier Condor who cancelled my direct flight from Egilsstaðir to Frankfurt a few weeks before my ferry cruise to Iceland a convenient four-hour trip turned into an extended, two-day journey including an overnight in Reykjavik and changing easyjet flights in London-Gatwick.

As a consolation prize the first leg was on a Dash 8 operated by Flugfélag Íslands, an Icelandair subsidiary. The one-hour flight to Reykjavik domestic airport (RKV) – which is the capital’s downtown airport and not the international Gateway Keflavík (KEF) – costs about 100 EUR.
Egilsstaðir airport, is tiny with very limited facilities. In fact, the cafeteria doubles as a departure lounge and gets closed to the public when a flight is due.

The cabin crew on my flight was rather grumpy which was a nice change from the check-in and security staff, who had gone out of their way before to make sure my stay at Egilsstaðir airport was as miserable as possible.

The route across Iceland is quite scenic, but unfortunately it was a cloudy evening.

Reykjavik domestic airport is a heaven for turboprop lovers and incredibly close to the city.
